Rain in Florianópolis: Mother and Daughter Killed After Landslide and Wall Collapse

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – According to initial information, the victims are mother and daughter and they were at home. Since early morning on Sunday, January 25th, floods and overflowing streams were recorded, in Florianópolis, the capital city of Santa Catarina state.

Two people died after a landslide and a wall collapsed in the region of Saco Grande, on Sunday, January 24th, a day of heavy rain in Florianópolis. The victims are mother and daughter.

Civil Protection issued an alert at 2:50 PM for persistent rain, with the risk of landslides in the next three hours.

The firefighters were deployed at around 12:53 PM and found the bodies among the rubble. The General Forensics Institute (IGP) was called in. The names of the victims have not been disclosed.

Mayor Gean Loureiro (DEM), also confirmed the deaths through social media. By 2 PM, the number of displaced and homeless people had not been disclosed.

According to the Mayor, the State Institute of Education (IEE) would be used as a shelter to accommodate the affected families and hotel facilities would also be made available.

Since early morning, flooding, landslides and overflowing streams were recorded. According to Civil Protection information, between 7:50 AM and 1:50 PM, a total of 100.8 mm rainfall was recorded.

In Morro da Penitenciária, a wall collapsed and residents were directed to leave their homes. A wall fell on part of a house in Saco dos Limões neighborhood. In both cases, no one was hurt.

The bad weather also affected candidates heading to the National High School Exam (ENEM) test locations, who faced flooding points and traffic disruptions. In the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) Integrated Physical Space (EFI), in the Trindade neighborhood, candidates faced flooding in the access ways to the classrooms.

Sections with special traffic conditions:

Flooding point at SC-401, opposite Tecnópolis, in the João Paulo neighborhood.
Flooding points in Trindade, Downtown, João Paulo and Agronômica neighborhoods.
Parts of Hercílio Luz Avenue and Beira-mar Norte are flooded and the road was blocked. Streets close to the Legislative Assembly of Santa Catarina building were also blocked by water.
Hercílio Luz Bridge was cleared for vehicles to ease entry and exit from the Island.
In the mainland region, drivers are unable to access the lane coming from the narrow neighborhood towards the Expressway. The alternative route is through the Coqueiros neighborhood.
Rua Silva Jardim opposite Hotel Veleiros, is interdicted for the reinstatement of electricity, water and telecommunications networks.
