RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Wednesday, December 30th, Amazon announced the best-selling books on its website during the year 2020 in Brazil. Between January and December, millions of copies were acquired, in print and digital versions, among the over 33 genres available, including novel, fantasy, horror, religious, and children’s books by national and foreign authors.
The first position went to ‘A Little Anti-racist Handbook’, by philosopher and activist Djamila Ribeiro. The book’s eleven chapters deal with topics such as racism, blackness, whiteness, culture, and current affairs. Djamila offers paths for reflection for those who want to deepen their perception of structural racist discrimination through an antiracist approach – a struggle for all. The book won the 2020 Jabuti Award in the Human Sciences category.
In a year marked by major anti-racism movements around the world, ‘Structural Racism’, by Silvio Almeida, and ‘Escravidão – Vol. 1’, by Laurentino Gomes, are also in the ranking. The list also includes international bestsellers such as 1984 and The Miracle Morning.
“Besides being a sales success, these works have encouraged Brazilians to invest their time getting to know new authors and books,” says Alexandre Munhoz, General Books Manager at Amazon. “Especially this year, we saw overall growth in demand and demand for books of all genres,” he adds.
To celebrate the end of the year, Amazon has a Retrospective section, with offers on physical and eBooks released in 2020 at up to 30% discount. Among the works are leading names and re-editions of classics, including ‘Blood and Smoke’, by Stephen King, ‘Ideas to Postpone the End of the World’, by Ailton Krenak, and ‘Mrs. Dalloway’, by Virginia Woolf.
