RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Monday, December 28th, a group comprising shopkeepers, employees and clients staged a protest calling for trade to be reopened in the city of Juiz de Fora in the state of Minas Gerais (MG).
The rally coincides with the scenarios in Búzios (Rio de Janeiro) and Manaus (Amazonas), where the population took to the streets to demand the reopening of the economy.
Currently in the red phase of restrictions, the city of Juiz de Fora does not authorize establishments considered ‘non-essential’ to operate. The new decree provides for stricter rules in the period between December 25th and January 7th.
With posters and slogans, the group called for the reopening of commercial activities.
According to the State Police, the protesters marched along Getúlio Vargas Avenue towards Brasil Avenue, where they proceeded until reaching the Juiz de Fora City Hall building.
On social media, participants said the group would try to talk to Mayor Antônio Almas (PSDB). The Juiz de Fora City Hall would not comment on this matter.
