Covid-19: Brazil Records 5.98 Million Cases and 168,000 Deaths (November 19th)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The novel coronavirus pandemic has already infected 5,981,767 people since its outbreak. In the past 24 hours, 35,918 new positive Covid-19 diagnoses were reported. On Wednesday, the data system reported 5,945,849 cumulative cases.

A total of 168,061 people have died since the start of the pandemic. Between Wednesday and Thursday, 606 more deaths were reported. On Wednesday, 167,455 deaths were registered in the system. A total of 5,407,498 people have already recovered. There are 2,173 deaths under investigation, according to Wednesday’s data.

The data are in the Ministry of Health’s daily update, disclosed over a press conference held yesterday, November 19th, at the body’s seat in Brasília. The balance is based on data submitted by the state Health Secretariats.

Over the past week, the Ministry struggled to update the figures due to a computer system malfunction. In yesterday’s press conference, the portfolio’s Executive Secretary, Élcio Franco, stated that it had been a hacker attack.

States

The states with the highest number of deaths by Covid-19 are São Paulo (41,074), Rio de Janeiro (21,806), Minas Gerais (9,648), Ceará (9,467), and Pernambuco (8,890).

The states with the least deaths from the disease are Acre (710), Roraima (711), Amapá (785), Tocantins (1,146), and Rondônia (1,513).
