RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The number of homicides in Brazil increased by four percent in the first nine months of the year, compared to the same period in 2019, reports the G1.
The data was presented on Thursday and results from a survey conducted by the Violence Monitor, an observatory of the Center for the Study of Violence at the University of São Paulo (NEV-USP) and the Brazilian Public Safety Forum.
According to the survey, after two years of record-breaking drops in the number of homicides in the country, Brazil has once again recorded an increase in violent crimes, at a time when compliance with social isolation due to Covid-19 in several states in the country is mandatory.
Over these nine months, a total of 32,298 violent deaths have been recorded, with 31,022 last year. In other words, 1,276 more victims in the 26 Brazilian states.
