RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Volunteers collected some 360 kilos of garbage from Praia Grande in Ubatuba (SP) on Tuesday morning, September 9th. With the extended Independence holiday, hot weather and social flexibility, the city registered full beaches and crowds of people with no masks.
Seven volunteers from the NGO Esmeralda collected garbage left behind by tourists on the beach, one of the busiest on São Paulo’s northern coast. The amount of garbage struck the group.
“It was dirtier today than any other holiday we’ve ever had. I was very shocked by the amount of garbage here. We cleaned up after a weekend in Copacabana and removed 300 kilos of garbage with 120 people. Today we removed more garbage with fewer volunteers,” explains the president of Esmeralda, Danilo Tauil.
The collected material will be passed on to a city cooperative.
In addition to beaches crowded with few sunbathers respecting the wearing of masks to prevent the coronavirus, Ubatuba recorded crowds in other places, as in the early hours of Sunday in a street party.
