Ecuadoreans Set Record as World’s Oldest Couple

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Julio Mora ran away from his parents’ home to secretly marry Waldramina Quinteros, on February 7th, 1941. Both families disapproved of the couple.

Seventy-nine years later, they are still together. He is 110 years old and she is 104, both lucid and in good health, although relatives say they are a little depressed because they miss their pre-pandemic big family gatherings.

“We haven’t had any of this since March,” said Cecilia. “My parents need family contact”.

There are longer marriages, but at the moment no other among such elderly people, according to Guinness World Records. Together, the sum of Julio’s and Waldramina’s ages totals 214 years.

Up until now, the world’s oldest couple was based in Austin, Texas (USA): Charlotte Henderson and John Henderson, who have a combined age of 212 years and 52 days.

The couple’s story

Júlio Mora was born on March 10th, 1910 and Quinteros on October 16th, 1915. They got married on February 7th, 1941, in the first church built by the Spaniards in Quito: La Iglesia de El Belen.

The two retired teachers live in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, where in mid-August they were certified by Guinness.

Their daughter Cecilia says they are lucid and active, although they no longer have the agility of the past. But “for a month they have been different, more downcast because they miss the big family gatherings”.

They have four children, 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandson.
