Brazilian Deputies Demand Justice Minister Explain Opening Office in US to Buy Weapons

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The PSOL (Socialism and Liberty Party) bench in Congress called on Justice Minister André Mendonça to explain the reasons for his Ministry opening an office in the United States to purchase weapons, ammunition and security equipment. The request was presented to the Chamber’s presiding officers, to be forwarded to Mendonça.

The request was made based on reports that the government’s initial plan is to conduct a pilot project in which the members assigned by the government will head to Washington on a temporary mission.

The deputies question the Ministry of Defense and Itamaraty‘s involvement in this process and request access to all documents related to the ordinance being drafted to establish the office. They also question if President Jair Bolsonaro or his sons and allies have either ordered or recommended the office to be established.

“An operation of this nature needs grounding and transparency. Otherwise, we may suspect that it is a deal conducted for ideological reasons. We want to know if Eduardo Bolsonaro is involved in this negotiation and also how Itamaraty [Foreign Office] is acting in the matter,” said the PSOL leader in the Chamber, Federal Deputy Sâmia Bomfim.
