Rio to Test Beach Placement Markings Using App

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Rio de Janeiro City Hall has announced that it will begin testing a marker system, through an App, for those planning to visit the city’s beaches.

The pilot project will be conducted on Copacabana beach, exclusively from Monday to Friday, when the flow of people is lower.

The plan is to mark out places on the beach with tapes, which can be used in two ways. Seventy percent of them will be destined to whoever comes first and the remaining 30 percent, to anyone who reserves through the App.

Currently, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, people are not allowed to remain on the beach.

Among these reserved spaces there will be corridors set up for people’s access and for the circulation of street vendors.

“Each square will accommodate a group of four people, within the same family, who will be able to spend time there with a degree of safety, keeping a distance,” said Flávio Graça, Superintendent of Education and Projects for the Municipal Health Surveillance.

The city believes that the tapes and their placement (which will be put up daily) will be funded by companies. The use of the spaces will be free. The project’s implementation date has not yet been disclosed.

Currently, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, people are not allowed to remain on the beach. Circulation on the sand is allowed for street vendors and swimmers wanting to access the sea. The practice of certain sports is also permitted.
