LATAM: Flight Demand Slumps 95.2 Percent in June Compared to June 2019

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Friday LATAM airline released its operational reports for the month of June. On Thursday, LATAM Brasil had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States.

With the impact of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, total demand from the airline recorded a sharp drop of 95.2 percent in June compared to the same period the year before, while seat supply dropped by 93.6 percent. The company’s flight occupancy rate dropped 21.6 percentage points to 61.4 percent.

In the accumulated figure for 2020, total demand decreased 51 percent compared to the same period last year, and supply decreased 48.3 percent, with the occupancy rate at 79.4 percent, shrinking 4.4 percentage points.

In the first half of the year, demand in Brazil dropped 39.3 percent over the same period last year, and supply shrank 38.2 percent, with an occupancy rate of 79.5 percent, down 1.5 percentage points.

International passenger traffic accounted for approximately 30 percent of the month’s total traffic, added the airline company.

In terms of international flights, demand plunged 97.6 percent in June in the annual comparison, while the supply of seats dropped 96.2 percent, and the occupancy rate stood at 54.6 percent, down 31.3 percentage points compared to June 2019.

In the year-to-date, demand in the international segment dropped 57.5 percent last month, and supply decreased 54.3 percent, with the occupancy rate at 79.6 percent, down six percentage points.
