Havana Leaves Confinement as Cuba Returns to Normal

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Havana, the last coronavirus hotspot in Cuba, will gradually restart its activities from Friday, July 3rd, although still without foreign tourists, after over 100 days of confinement due to the pandemic. The capital joins the rest of the territory, which has already begun a gradual relaxation of the measures to fight Covid-19.

Prime Minister Manuel Marrero said on Wednesday, July 1st, that after assessing the situation, the government authorized “the beginning of the first stage of recovery in Havana as of Friday, July 3rd”.

The first stage entails the gradual reinstatement of public transportation and a number of commercial and service activities, in addition to the flow of citizens who comply with social distancing measures. Only local tourism is allowed.

On Wednesday, the 11.2 million inhabitants island counted a total of 2,348 cases, with 2,218 people having recovered and 86 deaths, meaning that the novel coronavirus is considered under control.

A large part of Cuban territory has not reported cases of Covid-19 for several weeks, after the borders were closed on March 24th; patients and their contacts have been isolated for the past 15 days to avoid further contagion.
