RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A child died after being shot outside his home in the Éden neighborhood of São João de Meriti, a town in the low-lying area north of Rio de Janeiro known as Baixada Fluminense, on Tuesday night, June 30th.
Witnesses claim he was shot in the head. He was assisted by relatives and neighbors.
The city’s Health Secretariat reported that seven-year-old Ítalo Augusto was dead when he reached the neighborhood’s Emergency Hospital (UPA) at around 8:30 PM.
There is no information regarding the source of the shot and under what circumstances it would have occurred.
The boy’s sister lamented her loss on social media: “I loved you so much. You were like a son to me. As well as a sister, I was your godmother. I can’t believe you died like this,” the text says.
Ítalo is the 16th child shot dead in the Metropolitan Region of Rio in 2020.
