Evangelical Woman Arrested for Homophobia After Attacking Gay Man in Bus Terminal

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A woman was arrested on Sunday, June 28th, for the crime of homophobia and influence peddling, after attacking a young gay man at the bus station in the city of Lucas do Rio Verde, in Mato Grosso.

Footage of the attack is shown on a video circulating on social media. An evangelical, the assailant says that she was a “servant of God” and that she dislikes “gays”. Unrestrained, she claimed she would kill the young man and destroy part of the terminal.

In the police report, the young man, who works at a travel agency at the bus terminal, said the attack started after he alerted the woman to medical recommendations against Covid-19.

The assailant was buying a ticket at the counter, but she exceeded the distance for Covid-19 prevention as recommended by health authorities. Upset by the advice, she started the attacks.

According to witnesses, the assailant’s rampage did not stop even with the presence of police officers. While resisting arrest, she said she was related to a state official in an attempt to intimidate the officers.
