Rio de Janeiro: Clash in Rocinha Favela Leaves One Dead and Three Wounded

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – One man was killed and three were injured, among them a State Police (PM) officer, during a clash yesterday morning in the Rocinha favela, in the southern part of the city, according to the PM State Secretariat.

UPP Rocinha State Police officers were on their way to take over when they were shot at by heavily armed criminals inside at least three vehicles in the area known as Largo do Boiadeiro, according to the Secretariat.

“There was a clash and two vehicles were hit, one of the police officers was injured by shrapnel in his arm and was rushed to the Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital,” the Secretariat reported in a statement on Sunday.

The wounded were rushed to the same hospital and one of them did not survive the injuries. A suspect with priors was injured and did not survive. Two other men were shot in the foot and hand.

The incident is being investigated by the Homicide Police Department.
