Brazil Adds Over 1,100 Deaths in 24 Hours, Totals 17,971 Covid-19 Victims (May 19th)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Tuesday, May 19th, the Ministry of Health released its latest balance of deaths and confirmed cases of Covid-19. The main figures are:

  • 17,971 deaths, there were 16,792 on Monday
  • In 24 hours, a further 1,179 new deaths were recorded
  • 271,628 confirmed cases, there were 254,220 cases on Monday
  • In 24 hours, there were 17,408 more cases

The number of deaths added to the balance does not only reflect deaths that occurred on Tuesday. According to the Ministry, 225 of the more than 1,000 deaths were recorded over the preceding 3 days.

According to the Ministry, there are 146,863 patients under follow-up (54.1 percent of the total) and ️ 106,794 recovered (39.3 percent).

Countries that recorded more than a thousand deaths

With this Tuesday’s data, Brazil joins a group of four other countries that have recorded over 1,000 deaths in only 24 hours.

The daily peak above three digits was also reached by the United States (2,612) on April 29th, France (1,417) on April 7th, China (1,290) on April 17th and the United Kingdom (1,172) on April 29th, according to a Johns Hopkins University survey.

In the case of China, the figure was included in a statistical review, and not necessarily during the weeks when cases were growing.

In Spain and Italy, two of the countries most impacted by the novel coronavirus in Europe, the daily peak was close to a thousand: on March 27th Italy recorded 919 deaths and Spain recorded 961 on April 2nd.

Records in the states

The numbers were also a record in at least two states: São Paulo recorded 324 new deaths in one day and passed the 5,000 deaths mark. In Rio de Janeiro, there were 227 deaths and now the state records more than 3,000 deaths from Covid-19.
