Rio de Janeiro Records Total 2,700 Covid-19 Deaths (May 17th)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The state of Rio de Janeiro records 2,715 deaths from Covid-19, a disease caused by the novel coronavirus. There were 101 more confirmed deaths on Sunday, May 17th. There are a further 952 deaths under investigation, and 206 have been ruled out.

According to the report released by the State Health Secretariat on Sunday, the state recorded 22,238 confirmed cases of infection with the novel coronavirus. To date, among the confirmed cases, 17,557 patients have recovered from the disease in the state.

The capital city accounts for 12,921 cases of the disease, with 1,841 deaths. It is followed by Niterói with 1,188 confirmed cases and 65 deaths; Duque de Caxias with 919 cases and 145 deaths; and Nova Iguaçu, with 766 cases and 95 deaths.

In a note, the State Health Secretariat clarified that the cases and deaths recorded did not occur in the past 24 hours. It further stated that the testing capacity of the Noel Nutels Central Laboratory (Lacen) and partner laboratories doubled in the past week, from 900 to up to 1800 samples analyzed per day.
