São Paulo City Hall Decrees 3-Day Mourning for Novel Coronavirus Victims

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The mayor of São Paulo, Bruno Covas, has decreed three-day official mourning for the victims of the novel coronavirus pandemic. The city is the epicenter of the disease in Brazil and accounts for at least 1,035 deaths, according to the Municipal Health Secretariat.

The decision was published in the Municipal Gazette on Saturday, April 25th, when it came into effect.

The text justifies the decision as “an expression of deep regret for the deaths that occurred”.

The decree also points to the “deep sadness surrounding the city of São Paulo” and the “spirit of solidarity of the people of São Paulo, who are struggling together to face this severe pandemic”. In addition, it emphasizes the “desolation that is befalling each of the bereaved families, shared by all the people of São Paulo”.

According to the Municipal Health Secretariat, the number of confirmed cases of the disease in the capital of São Paulo by 3 PM on Friday, April 24th, is 12,202, in addition to 48,130 suspected cases.

A balance released by the secretariat on Friday shows that 67 percent of ICU beds for Covid-19 patients are filled. The poorer districts far from the city center account for most of the deaths in the capital.
