Brazil Reaches 30,000 Cases and Nearly 2,000 Deaths from Covid-19 (April 16th)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – With another 2,105 new confirmed cases, Brazil has reached the mark of 30,425 people infected by coronavirus, according to data from the Ministry of Health released on Thursday, April 16th.

The number of deaths has grown by 188 since the last report and now stands at 1,924. The mortality rate of the disease is 6.3 percent.

The state of São Paulo continues to be the most affected, with 853 deaths and 11,568 confirmed cases of the disease. Four other states have also passed the mark of one thousand infections: Rio de Janeiro (3,944 cases and 300 deaths), Ceará (2,386 cases and 124 deaths), Amazonas (1,719 cases and 124 deaths) and Pernambuco (1,683 cases and 160 deaths).

The main data are:

  • 1,924 deaths, there were 1,736 on Wednesday, an increase of 10.8 percent;
  • 30,425 confirmed cases, versus 28,320 the day before, an increase of 7.4 percent.

Use of masks

The São Paulo Mayor’s Office published on Thursday, a decree recommending the wearing of face protection masks by the city’s entire population during the pandemic.

The measure is in line with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health’s guidelines, suggesting the preferential use of homemade items, made with fabric, to prevent shortages in the health system.

Mandetta dismissed

After weeks of conflict and in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic in Brazil, which has yet to reach its peak, President Jair Bolsonaro dismissed Health Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta, after weeks of publicized strife between them.
