Rio’s Subway Fare Will Rise to R$5 Starting April 2nd

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Regulatory Agency for Public Transport Services Provided in Waterway, Rail, Subway and Highways of the State of Rio de Janeiro (AGETRANSP) authorized the annual readjustment of Rio’s subway fare to R$ 5, as of April 2nd. The new fare will be effective until April 1st, 2021.

Passengers today pay R$4.60 for the single ticket so the increase is 8.69 percent, more than double the official inflation in the 12-month period ended in February, which stood at 4.01 percent, according to the Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA).

The new fare will apply to lines 1 and 2, under the management of Metroviária S.A Concession, as well as line 4, of Rio Barra S.A. Concession. The authorization was published in the State Gazette on Friday, March 13th.
