RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Twenty-nine games undefeated in the season, 24 in the Brasileirão national soccer competition, Jorge Jesus’ team suffered its first defeat. And what a defeat it was.
Santos scored 4-0, hit the post twice and canceled out the opponents’ style of play at its home ground Vila Belmiro. The last setback for the team had been against Bahia, on August 4th.
With a show by Soteldo, Marinho and Carlos Sanchez, Jorge Sampaoli’s team beat the stars of Flamengo.
Gabigol, Arrascaeta, and Bruno Henrique were far from their top level of performance throughout the year. Sanchez, on two occasions, Marinho and Eduardo Sasha scored the goals of the match.
Flamengo ends the championship with 90 points, 16 points in front of second-place Santos.
