Rio Civil Police Operation Investigates Extortion by State Police Officers

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The State Secretariat of the Civil Police (SEPOL) of Rio de Janeiro launched on Friday, November 29th, an operation against crimes of extortion, embezzlement [undue advantage], criminal organization and grand larceny. The targets are state police officers.

Seven arrest warrants and 14 search and seizure warrants are being served.

According to the Civil Police, several victims gave testimony and helped identify the criminal group.

The operation is carried out by agents of the Department of Repression of Crimes Against Immaterial Property (DRCPIM), with the support of the State Police Inspector of Internal Affairs.

According to the Civil Police, the two-month long investigations showed that the suspects “passed themselves off as DRCPIM agents to extort money from businessmen in various parts of the state of Rio de Janeiro”.

According to the Civil Police, several victims gave testimony and helped identify the criminal group.
