Brazil Will Double Limit on Duty-Free Shop Purchases

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President Jair Bolsonaro announced yesterday, October 11th, that the federal government will double the current limit for purchases in free shops.

“Brazilians who return from trips abroad will be able to buy US$1,000 (R$4,000) in products at airports – today, the limit is US$500,” he wrote in his personal Twitter account.

The free shops or duty free shops are stores typically located in airport departure and arrival halls where products are sold free of duty and taxes. According to the president, the Ministry of Economy is preparing a decree on the measure, to be published in the near future.

Also on Twitter, Bolsonaro announced that the quota allowed for purchases in Paraguay, for travellers arriving by land, will change. In this case, the government will increase the maximum amount allowed per person from US$300 to US$500.
