Brazil’s Judo Wins Four Medals at Brasília’s Grand Slam

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Winning a gold medal with Ketleyn Quadros, Brazil’s judo finished the second day of the Brasília Grand Slam on Monday with four medals. Alexia Castilhos and David Lima won the silver, while Maria Portela took the bronze medal.

In weight category 63kg, Brazil won a double. This is because Ketleyn Quadros faced and beat her countrywoman Alexia Castilhos in the final. The bronze medalist at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games won the first Grand Slam in her career, at the age of 32.

In addition, the veteran scored 1,000 points in the ranking that will determine the Olympic qualifiers for Tokyo-2020. As a result, Ketleyn will surpass her fellow-countrywoman (and main rival to take the spot in the category) in the Olympic race.

In the same category, Brazil was also represented in Brasília by Ryanne Lima and Mariana Silva. The first was eliminated in her second match, while Mariana progressed to the semi-final when she was defeated by Alexia. In the bronze medal match, she was defeated, by ippon, by British Amy Livesey.

Also in the female category, Maria Portela stood out in the 70kg category. She took bronze when she beat Canadian Kelita Zupancic, by waza-ari. Ellen Santana, Luana Carvalho, and Amanda Oliveira also competed in this category, albeit unsuccessfully. They were eliminated before the medal matches.

In the male category, national judo was represented by eight athletes. Only one of them climbed the podium this Monday. In the 73kg category, David Lima won the silver medal after being defeated in the final by Russian Musa Mogushkov, by ippon. Jefferson Santos Júnior, Eduardo Barbosa and Marcelo Contini were eliminated before the podium contests.

The same occurred with Guilherme Schimidt, Guilherme Guimarães, Victor Penalber, and Eduardo Yudy Santos, all unsuccessful in the 81kg category.
