Rio’s Galeão Airport Handled Over 1.6 Million Passengers in 29 Days

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Between August 24th and September 21st, more than 12,400 flights began or ended at Galeão, officially known as Tom Jobim International Airport; there was also a record for atypical traffic since the concessionaire began its administration in 2014.

During this period, in addition to planned landings and departures, there were 18 alternating flights and 44 transferred flights, all bound for Santos Dumont.

A month-long renovation of the main runway of the Santos Dumont airport in downtown Rio, between August 12th and September 12th,  had restricted the number of departures.

Alternating flights are those that change their route at the end of the flight and transferred flights change their destination while on the ground before takeoff.

The busiest traffic in the period was recorded on August 30th, when approximately 66,000 people flew through Tom Jobim International Airport.

The figure represents RIOgaleão’s record number of passengers in a single day. Before this period, the 64,000 passenger mark had been reached on August 12th, 2016, during the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.

Between August 24th and September 21st, RIOgaleão has operated 428 daily flights on average, an increase of 89 percent in relation to the airport’s average daily traffic, which is 227 flights.

Additional X-ray teams helped ensure that passenger services remained within the airport’s standards. The average transit time in the reported period was two minutes and 36 seconds – on a common day, with significantly less passenger traffic, the assessed time was two minutes and 22 seconds.
