Bárbara Paz Wins Best Documentary Award at Venice Film Festival

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL –  Winning the Independent Critics Award during the 76th Venice International Film Festival, Bárbara Paz took the trophy for Best Documentary in the Venice Classic Film Festival for “Babenco: Tell Me When I Die” on Saturday, September 7th.

“I won, my God!”, celebrated the actress on her social media.

In addition to directing the feature film, Barbara is also its co-producer alongside Myra Babenco and the brothers Caio Gullane and Fabiano Gullane.

“This award is very important for my country. We need to say no to censorship: long live freedom of expression!”, said Bárbara on receiving the award. (Photo: Internet Reproduction)

During the festival, the actress and director seized the opportunity of her presence during the release of the feature Martin Eden, one of the Golden Lion contestants, to protest in favor of the Amazon.

“Babenco” establishes a relationship between illness and art for the director born in Mar del Planta, Argentina, and naturalized as a Brazilian citizen in 1977.

“I wanted to record the man. The thinker – who was a filmmaker, too. Everyone wanted to talk about the work, and I wanted to talk about the man,” Bárbara said in an interview with newspaper Estado.

Deceased in 2016, Babenco was the director of films such as Pixote (1980), Carandiru (2003) and Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), the first Brazilian co-production to compete for an Oscar in the category of Best Foreign Film.
