Toffoli: “The Federal Supreme Court Guarantees Democracy in Brazil”

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Friday, August 30th, the president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Justice Dias Toffoli, lectured to more than 500 members of various trade unions in Brazil. In his speech, Toffoli maintained that “it is the STF that guarantees democracy in Brazil.”

“There is no democracy without the STF. The conscience that you, workers, have, there are sectors of society and parliament that do not understand or do not want to understand. The Supreme Court has become the target of attacks, attacks on the leadership of the judiciary itself, on the STF itself. To attack the judiciary is to attack each one of the Brazilian citizens,” he said.

“It is the STF that guarantees democracy in Brazil, which is the guarantor of harmony between the Powers, and guarantees the federal pact, the disputes between states that are settled in the STF. The issues in the tax area between the taxpayer and the state end with the STF. The STF is responsible for mediating and resolving all issues. And there are social issues of greater importance to have a country that the Constitution determines, which is a more just, supportive country with less inequality between people and regions,” he concluded.
