RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The United States granted its “agrément” — which in diplomatic language means formal authorization — to deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PSL-SP) to take over the Brazilian Embassy in Washington. The reply to President Bolsonaro’s request arrived on Thursday, August 8th.
The White House’s favorable decision to the appointment of Eduardo, son of Jair Bolsonaro, was already expected. American president Donald Trump had praised the deputy only a few days ago.
According to an important Brazilian government source, along with the US go-ahead, there was a handwritten note from Trump saying that he “can’t wait to work with Eduardo”. For those close to President Bolsonaro, this is a major symbol of prestige.
However, the White House’s approval is not enough for Eduardo Bolsonaro to take up the post. Before that, he will need to be assessed by the Brazilian Senate’s Committee on Foreign Affairs and National Defense. Should he pass the test, his appointment will be put to the vote in the Senate.
Eduardo is 35 years old, considered by many as too young for the position of ambassador compared to more experienced diplomats.
In addition, critics of President Bolsonaro have accused him of nepotism — a concept rejected by official legal bodies.
