Plastic Straws are Banned in the State of São Paulo

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Plastic straws are banned in hotels, restaurants, bars, bakeries, night clubs, dance halls and musical events of any kind, among other commercial establishments in the state of São Paulo.

The resolution was published this Saturday, July 13th, in the Official State Gazette.

Plastic straws are to be replaced by recyclable paper straws, edible or biodegradable material, individually packaged in “hermetically sealed envelopes made of the same material.”

According to the resolution, those who do not comply with the law will be fined, and the amount may be doubled in cases of recurrence.

The amount collected will be used for environmental programs.

In São Paulo’s capital city, straws have been banned since June 25th.
