Five People Are Still Missing After a Shipwreck in Amazonas

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Five people are still missing after a shipwreck on the Juru River, in the city of Carauari (AM), in the west of the state, 788 kilometers from Manaus. The information was provided by the state government in a press release on Friday morning, June 21st.

The boat, used for passenger transport, sank near a community called Bacaba. According to the statement, 97 people were on board at the time of the accident and 92 were rescued.

A team of four divers from the Fire Department was sent to the city to assist in the searches, along with members of the 9th Naval District Command of the Navy.

An aircraft from the 3rd General Purpose Helicopter Squadron was sent to the site to support the search and rescue efforts. An inquiry will be opened to determine who was responsible for the wreck.
