Netflix in Brazil Could Threaten the Reign of Globo, Says Study

By Richard Mann

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Research commissioned by Ricardo Feltrin’s column, in UOL, carried out casually by two experts unveiled the numbers related to Netflix’s performance in Brazil. For comparison purposes only, the Video on Demand (VOD) service already represents half of TV Globo’s turnover, the largest Open TV broadcaster in Brazil.

The result is impressive, considering that the streaming platform has been operating in Brazil for less than eight years. One of the study’s researchers, a mathematician, conducted an evaluation based on traffic data provided by Comscore, regarding Netflix’s performance in Brazil.

According to the statistics company, the service had 50.05 million “single viewers” in April, which means that the movies and series platform was accessed by at least 50 million different devices or IPs, over a period of 30 days. This figure was said to be related to “single viewers” of premium accounts, with access to as many as four screens, and divided into four.

Based on this survey, it is believed that Netflix today would have, on average, 12.5 million subscribers. Considering that each one of these individuals would pay an average of R$30 (US$7.50) every month, the monthly billing figure would amount to R$375 million per month and R$4.5 billion per year.

As a comparison, Globo recorded a turnover of R$10.06 billion in 2018 alone. Thus, the streaming service may achieve TV Globo’s turnover in a few years. In the meantime, Netflix may have its reign threatened with the onset of new services, such as Apple TV+, Disney+, among others.
