Brazil Wants to Lead Global Seafood Market

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Jorge Seif Júnior, National Secretary of Aquaculture and Fisheries, said he is determined to include Brazil among the world’s leading seafood producers. During a live transmission on social media, he highlighted the vastitude of the Brazilian coast. “We have everything it takes to be a world’s leader [in seafood production],” Seif said, adding that Brazil will follow the example of China, one of the world’s largest fish producers.

We need to make Brazil great not only in grains and other proteins but also in seafood production,” said the secretary. “With all this potential, we have to grow.” According to Seif, biological limits would be respected so that neither the biomass nor the species would be compromised. He explained that seafood production could also help the pharmaceutical industry. For example, he noted that the country currently doesn’t have a national industry that can utilize tilapia skin to produce drugs.
