We have the top three picks for this Friday, and below there is a list of bars and lounges that are always a good option.

LIVE:
Jazz @ The Maze (Catete) – Since 2005, every first Friday of the month is the most traditional jazz night in Rio de Janeiro, courtesy of The Maze. For six consecutive years they have been listed by Downbeat magazine as one of the 150 best Jazz venues in the world.

Tonight will feature the usual high-quality live jazz plus authentic Indian food courtesy of ‘Hoje tem curry,’ plus one of the best views of Rio.

Tickets are between R$40-R$50 and the night starts at 10PM.

PARTY:
Chá da Alice @ Circo Voador (Lapa) – On the first Friday of 2019, ‘Chá da Alice’ (Alice’s Tea) will occupy Lapa’s Circo Voador for the launch of its newest project – a mix of pop, funk and Carnival, with a show from MC Pocahontas, plus guest appearances from the Carnival blocos Bunytos de Corpo and Egyto’s Saymos.

MC Pocahontas will be the main act, plus participation from blocos Bunytos de Corpo and Egyto’s Saymos. DJs for the night will be Babi Deejay and Gui Serrano.

Tickets are between R$50-R$100 and the night begins at 11PM.

LIVE:
Jackstone @ Mississippi Delta Blues (Gamboa) – The band Jackstone are kicking off 2019 at Mississippi Delta Blues bar with a great tribute to the blues origins of some of the world’s most famous rockers: The Rolling Stones.

Tickets are R$20 and the show should start at 10PM.

Winehouse (Botafogo)
Winehouse is a wine bar run by a British expat that has brought an eclectic range of wines to Rio including a mix of fabulous national wines and international favorites. There is also a great selection of nibbles and cheese boards. For those that aren’t too keen on wine, there is plenty of beer and cocktail options too. Happy hour begins at 5PM and finishes at 8PM.

Void/House of Food (Botafogo)
Blending culinary, drinks and fashion, the bar/store invites a different chef to prepare a new menu every week. Besides great imported beer labels, it usually serves delicious veggie food and homemade burgers.

Pavão Azul (Copacabana)
Pavão Azul is a lively bar in Copacabana, famous for its exceptionally cold beers and prawn pastels. It gets crowded there every night, making every day of the week seem like the weekend.

Canastra Bar (Ipanema)
The Canastra Wine Bar in Ipanema offers a great selection of wines and cheeses and is quickly becoming known for its nice atmosphere and friendly service.

Blue Agave (Ipanema)
Blue Agave Ipanema is always a great place for Mexican food, drinks and for watching live sport streams and broadcasts. Just around the corner from Posto 9, the bar is also known for its mostly English-speaking staff and crowd which frequents the establishment. Be sure to check out Blue Agave in Copacabana also for a great night out.
