September has Largest Job Creation Since 2013 in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Benefiting from strong numbers in the services and industry segments, the creation of jobs with formal contracts reached the highest level for the month of September in five years.

According to data released by the General Register of Employees and Unemployed (CAGED), of the Ministry of Labor, 137,336 formal work posts were created last month. The indicator measures the difference between new jobs and layoffs.

The last time job creation had exceeded this level had been in September 2013, when new jobs had surpassed layoffs by 211,068. Job creation totaled 719,089 from January to September and 459,217 in the last twelve months.

The leader was the service sector, with the creation of 60,961 positions, followed by the manufacturing industry (37,449 positions) and commerce (26,685 positions). The level of employment fell only in the agricultural sector, which fired 2,688 more workers than it hired last month.

All five Brazilian regions created jobs with a formal contract in September. The Northeast led the opening of positions, with 62,177 jobs, followed by the Southeast (38,933 jobs). 18,063 stations were opened in the South, 10,262 in the North and 7,901 in the Midwest.

In the division by states, only Mato Grosso do Sul fired more than it hired, with the closing of 2,645 formal job positions. The largest positive changes in the balance of employment occurred in São Paulo (22,448 jobs), Pernambuco (21,414), Alagoas (15,179) and Paraná (9,487).
