Rio’s ‘Talk of The Town’ is Offering Lectures in English

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Talk of the Town, a lively lecture and debate group in Ipanema, is currently offering lectures in English on the topic of ‘Great British Writers.’ There are still three lectures to go, ranging from subjects as diverse as feminist writers and country retreats, and the magic of historical novels.

The current installment in the lecture series is, ‘Beatrix Potter and Virginia Woolf – two great feminist ladies and country retreats to escape to;’ which will be held this Monday, June 11th at 1PM.

This is followed by a lecture on ‘Historical novels: Ken Follet and the Kingsbridge Series – The Pillars of the Earth and World Without End;’ which will take place next Monday, June 18th at 1PM.

Finally, to round off the series, there will be a lecture on ‘Historical Fiction: Dame Hilary Mantel – Wolf Hall, magic locations of a good drama by a frustrated historian;’ which will be held on Monday, June 26th, also at 1PM.

Leading the course is Tania S. Bastos. She is a master in the history of international relations at the State University of Rio de Janeiro.

Her expertise is also as a specialist in British culture at Regent’s College, London, as well as a professor of foreign policy and Brazilian culture at the American universities of John Hopkins, Princeton, Oklahoma and Wharton – University of Pennsylvania.

This is a great course for those looking to practice their English, those looking to develop their debating skills or even just to find their voice and confidence. Talk of the Town insist that it is their job to make you feel comfortable with the language you are speaking in any situation.

There will also be many more courses throughout the year, and Talk of the Town have already successfully held courses on subjects as varied as politics, economics, cinema, literature, philosophy, arts and sciences, and they often hold popular tours on famous artists being exhibited in Rio, such as Matisse, Dali, Gaudí and Mondrian.

The price of the course is R$260 to register and an additional R$260 at the beginning of the course for the series of four lectures. Or participants can pay R$200 per one-off lecture, subject to vacancies. There is a five percent discount for Talk of the Town students enrolled in 2018.
