Situated in Benfica, fifteen minutes away from the Triagem Metro Station, in Zona Norte (North Zone), CADEG (Centro de Abastecimento do Estado da Guanabara) is considered the most traditional food market among Cariocas and Rio’s residents. Since the past generations, CADEG is the very place to buy specific articles, like flowers, codfish and wine. Especially in festive occasions, like Christmas and Easter, the venue gets full of costumers.

During the Summer Festival, most of CADEG’s restaurants will be serving menus especially prepared with the season’s typical ingredients. At restaurant Mexido Gastrô, an Italian risotto with carnaroli rice, prawns, white wine and creamy cheese will be costing R$115 (for two people). The plate will be accompanied by a bottle of the Sauvignon Blanc “Sol de Chile”.

At Cucina Penna, visitors can find the traditional fish-and-shrimp “moqueca” for R$139, while Brasas Show restaurant will offer an unusual seafood dish, the “Mar em Brasas”, which gathers calamari rings, shrimp, mussels and carambola, a Brazil’s typical fruit, for R$139 (for two people).

Among the culinary options being offered at CADEG, one should also try the excellent codfish recipes. At Bacalhau & Cia, the menu includes a gadus morhua shredded codfish dish, with red onion, Portuguese olives and garlic. Those ordering this dish will get a mini bottle of beer Super Bock for free.

For those into meat, a good bet is Empório Gourmet’s fillet with blue cheese sauce, shiitake and “baroa” potato gnocchi, which costs R$149. At Costelão do CADEG, there will be roast chicken with summer salad and Arabian rice for R$99.

Apart from the exclusive menus served by CADEG’s restaurants, another attraction worth to check out is the talk “The terroirs of Brazil – Terranova, Miolo and Millésime”, which will happen on Sunday, January 21st. An exhibition of classic cars will also take place at CADEG on that same day.

A week later, on January 28th, the Summer Festival will host a Harley-Davidson motorcycles’ exhibition. The line-up for this day also includes a show, a talk on summer snacks with chef Marcello Barcelos and the wine tasting session “Viajando em Cavas – Degustação Freixenet”, with specialist Paulo Nicolay. What’s more, the festival will host a pre-Carnival ball for children on February 4th.
