Music, Arts and Skateboarding Festival Opens at Rio’s MAM

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – This weekend, October 14th and 15th, Rio’s Museum of Modern Art, in Aterro do Flamengo, hosts the Arte Core Festival. In its fifth edition, the event promotes a variety of free activities at MAM’s outdoor area from 10AM to 10PM, including musical presentations, debates, workshops and exhibitions.

This Arte Core’s edition pays special attention to the skateboarding culture, offering workshops with collective I love XV on both days of event, photo internet recreation.

With the aim of embracing the different languages from the Brazilian visual arts’ scene, Arte Core brings painters, grafitters and performers from many parts of the country.

Names like Alexandre Baltazar, Fabiano Rodrigues, Bozó Bacamarte, Carla Barth and Criola – from Rio, São Paulo, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Sul and Minas, respectively – will be exhibiting on both days of event.

Art installations by Carioca artist Mario Bands, São Paulo’s artist Renato Custódio and Carioca collective Muda do Rio de Janeiro will also be displayed from 10AM to 10PM. What’s more, other artists will be selling their engravings.

The audience can also check round tables with some of the participant art collectives, NGOs and researchers. On Saturday, October 14th, Arte Core promotes the debate session “Art as a Sustainability Movement” at 3PM, run by Agência Somar, focused in social-environmental impacts, NGO Rio+ and United Nations representatives.

On Sunday, October 15th, musician and researcher Antonio Spirito Santo, visual artist and percussionist Negalê Jones, designer Izabella Suzart and artist Viviane Laprovita participate in the discussion “Art and Culture in the Diaspora”, at 3PM.

This Arte Core’s edition pays special attention to the skateboarding culture. On both days of event, the collective I Love XV leads a skateboarding workshop from 10AM to 12PM. At 4PM, the exhibition of “Santo Amaro Era Skatista” (Saint Amaro was a skater) will take place at MAM’s movie theater, followed by a debate with director Felipe Martins and skater Ademar Luquinhas.

Apart from the skateboarding workshop, Saturday’s line up includes a drawing workshop for children with Rodrigo Villas at 10AM, a typography workshop with Guga Liuzzi at 1:20 PM and a grafitti workshop with Fleshbeck Crew at 3PM. On Sunday, Bozó Bacamarte will run a course on engraving on PVC at 11:40 AM, and Ronaldo Land and Cochi will teach photography techniques at 3PM.

Great musical attractions will also take part of Arte Core. Opening the line up on both days will be DJ Tamenpi, at 5PM, who will spin rhythms like hip-hop, soul, funk, jazz, afrobeat, reggae and Brazilian music. The Nomade Orchestra performs on Saturday at 6PM, followed by DJs Tata Ogan, David Tabalipa and Nepal. Band Zé Bigode brings a blend of jazz and Brazilian Music to MAM on Sunday, at 6PM, while rapper Bnegao closes the event at 9PM.

Aimed at promoting sustainable actions, this Arte Core’s edition includes ecological toilets, selective garbage collection and the Gaia Fair, gathering sustainable brands that offer recycled products. A food court with culinary stalls will also be present at the event.
