Modernidades Fotográficas, 1940-1964 Exhibit Opens at IMS-RJ

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On March 20th, the Instituto Moreira Salles (IMS-RJ) opened the photography exhibition, Modernidades: fotografia brasileira 1940-1964 (Modernities: Brazilian Photography 1940-1964). Curated by Ludger Derenthal, the exhibition features more than 160 images taken by four major Brazilian photographers during a time of rapid transformation and a modernization period for the country.

Works included in the exhibition were taken by photojournalist José Medeiros, abstractionist Thomaz Farkas, industrial photographer Hans Gunter Flieg, and modernist Marcel Gautherot.

The images range from scenes of everyday life to modern architecture and the industrialization of parts of the country to the impact of modernity on some of Brazil’s indigenous peoples to cultural practices and religious observances during the time period in the country.

Before heading to Rio, the exhibition was held in Berlin, Lisbon, Paris and Madrid. In July of last year, the Huffington Post selected Modernidades fotográficas, 1940-1964 as one of the five best exhibitions to see in the world.

Located in the Rio de Janeiro neighborhood of Gávea, the Instituto Moreira Salles is the former home of Ambassador Walther Moreira Salles. Considered a landmark of modern architecture and an attraction worth visiting in an of itself, the house and surrounding area, became the Instituto Moreira Salles in 1999. It is well known for hosting exhibitions, films, and concert events throughout the year.
