Doug Hutchings Opens BodyInMind Clinic in Rio’s Gávea

By Shalina Chatlani, Contributing Reporter

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – BodyInMind, a new low-cost holistic physical therapy practice, has opened in Gávea on Fridays for those who are suffering from chronic illness and pain or may not have been able to afford more expensive conventional treatment, according to the clinic. The business was started by Doug Hutchings, a trainer who holds a degree in physical education and science.

Hutchings moved to Rio last year with his wife and daughter from New Zealand, for the World Cup, because his wife works in events. They decided to stay for the Olympics too, and Hutchings decided he wanted to start a clinic.

“I wanted to start a Holistic Clinic , and especially a low-cost clinic here to reach people who can’t normally afford such specialized treatment,” said Hutchings.

The clinic offers non-invasive and gentle holistic treatments, such as CranioSacral therapy and Bowen Technique, to help treat muscular and nervous system problems. Hutchings told The Rio Times that some of his past patients include celebrities like Anne Hathaway and Tom Ford.

Some of the challenges that Hutchings has come across while starting a business in Rio include language struggles and issues with the residency process. “The daily challenges of doing business in Brasil as a gringo definitely includes learning the Portuguese,” said Hutchings. “The hardest part was the paperwork to receive my permanent residency, which enables me to work here. Seemed like most of my first six months here was at a notary/translator or the Policia Federal at the airport!”

“BodyInMind is something like the name suggests- an acknowledgement that our body and mind are not separate entities-both are intricately linked,” said Hutchings. “My aim is to bring this approach to Rio to help others become more connected physically, emotionally and spiritually.”

Principally, the clinic offers Craniosacral therapy, Bowen technique, and massage, which are suitable for all age ranges because they are non-invasive. With emphasis on providing a form of affordable healthcare, the price for one session of these treatments at the low cost Friday afternoon clinic is R$85.

“We have a real opportunity to help people in chronic pain or for those who want natural alternatives to heal, other than prescription drugs or surgery,” said Hutchings. “On the whole it gives me a chance to connect with the local Carioca and expatriate community here in Rio, for which I am grateful.”

The BodyInMind clinic is open from 1PM to 5:30 PM on Fridays. After initial consultation, a brief medical history will be taken, and a physical assessment may occur if necessary before treatment begins.

An appointment can be made through the BodyInMind website, where one can also read statements from past patients. Hutchings also does group training based mostly out of Ipanema and Leblon.
