By Nicole Eberhard, Contributing Reporter

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Cidade Maravilhosa of Brazil is undoubtedly a sexy city, making it an apt destination for a romantic getaway for traveling couples. It is a city that breathes passion – and not just passion for football – but passion can be found in the expressive language, in the pulsing samba rhythms, and in the warm smiles of the Cariocas.

Add this to the tropical backdrop, with great weather year-round, soft sandy beaches, fresh seafood, heady cocktails, refreshing coconut water and beautiful people (often scantily clad), and it’s a recipe for an unforgettable couple’s vacation in Rio.

Romantic activities in Rio de Janeiro are abound, at any time of the day. Couples can make the most of the morning by enjoying a hand-in-hand stroll through the tranquil oasis of Jardim Botânico, or the nearby Parque Lage. The café in Parque Lage’s old mansion is the perfect spot for breakfast or a cup of coffee.

A somewhat more active thing to do in pairs is a cycling tour. Rent a bike and take a leisurely cycle around Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon or along the beachfront avenues of Copacabana and Ipanema. Alternatively, book a bike tour for a fresh way to enjoy more in-depth sightseeing.

For high flyers looking to impress their other half, it doesn’t get more spectacular than a helicopter flight. The views are incredible and this is a special excursion to enjoy together.

The most romantic time of day in Rio de Janeiro is without a doubt around sunset. While there are many great spots to watch the sun go down, one of the best is Sugarloaf Mountain. Head up in the late afternoon to get a good viewing spot, and together watch the fading light cast a soft glow over the city before it starts coming alive with twinkling lights.

After sunset, find an intimate dining spot. Dine on delicious fresh seafood at Azul Marinho in Arpoador, looking out over Arpoador and Ipanema. Another prime option is to head up into Santa Teresa to Aprazível, to enjoy gourmet dining complete with breathtaking views over Guanabara Bay.

Top this with a decadent night out. For the ultimate classy nightcap, go to the Belmond Copacabana Palace Hotel for a drink. Even those not staying here can enjoy the glamour for an evening at one of the hotel’s top restaurants or at their Copacabana Piano Bar.

A more laid-back option is to drink a relaxed caipirinha at one of the kiosks lining Copacabana and Ipanema beach. Then stroll along the boardwalk, which is full of life in the evening with live music, and tourists and locals alike taking a walk along the beachfront.

For live music and some dancing head to Rio Scenarium for a fun night out in an eclectic old mansion turned antique store turned bar and restaurant. This highly popular spot in Lapa may be busy but retains a cosy atmosphere across its three floors. The samba and forró are enough to get anyone on the dancefloor, regardless of rhythm and dancing ability!

After enjoying the many pleasure of Rio de Janeiro, retreat outside the city for a bit more privacy and a slower pace. Take a day trip to Recreio beach, outside of Rio’s main tourists zones. With less development and less crowds, it’s a little piece of paradise. For a more extensive break, enjoy a longer getaway to Paraty or Ilha Grande. Stay in a secluded pousada (guesthouse) or high-end spa and enjoy a romantic vacation in an exotic destination.

Rio de Janeiro oozes sensuality, turning just about any activity in this Brazilian city into something romantic if done in pairs. Whether it’s a honeymoon or just a romantic break, embrace the amorous side of Rio for a couple’s vacation.
