RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Featuring over 170 works by the American photographer, William Eggleston, the free exhibition, “William Eggleston, a cor americana” (“William Eggleston, The color of America”) opened at Instituto Moreira Salles in Gávea on Saturday, March 14th and will remain on display through June 28th.
Born in Memphis, Tennessee, United States, William Eggleston is known for helping to elevate the field of color photography to a fine art.
Through composition and lighting, Eggleston transformed seemingly ordinary scenes of daily life, captured in smaller towns and suburbs located in the southern United States, into a full and rich pictorial history of America. His works have inspired countless photographers and have been featured in art galleries around the world.
The current exhibition at Instituto Moreira Salles is the largest collection on display of the photographer’s work in South America, to date. Curated by Thyago Nogueira, the collection features 172 images produced during the 1960s and 1970s.
Visiting hours for the exhibition are Tuesdays through Sundays 11AM to 8PM.
Additionally, the exhibition Rio Exposure: First poses – Views of the city following the arrival of photography (1840-1930) is also currently on display at the Instituto Moreira Salles.
