Mr. BigSunday’s Rio Nightlife Pick – The bands Mr. Big and Winger will perform live at Fundição Progresso in Lapa tonight.

Opening for Mr. Big tonight will be the American metal band Winger, known for the songs, “Seventeen” and “Headed For A Heartbreak”, the band rose to popularity in the late 1980s.

Mr. Big, an American hard rock band, also became popular in the late 1980s. They are well known for their songs, “To Be With You”, “Green Tinted Sixties Mind“, “Just Take My Heart” and their cover of the Cat Stevens song, “Wild World“.

Mr. Big first performed in Brazil in 1994 in São Paulo and returned to play there again in 2011. Tonight will mark the band’s first performance in Rio de Janeiro.

The bands Mr. Big and Winger will perform live at Fundição Progresso in Lapa tonight. This will mark the first ever appearance of Mr. Big in Rio.

Blocos (Various Locations)
With the official start of Carnival 2015 only days away, the free street parties, known as blocos, are already well underway. More than forty blocos and practices are scheduled to take place today across the city. Among today’s notable processions is the Bloco Da Preta. The popular bloco will gather on Av. Presidente Vargas in Centro at 11AM and parade until 3PM. Over 400,000 people are expected to attend this procession. The popular bloco Afroreggae will also parade today. They will begin at 10AM on Av. Atlântica (in front of R. Rainha Elizabeth) in Copacabana and parade until 2PM. In Barra da Tijuca, the Banda Da Barra will meet on Av. Lucio Costa 3600 (in front of the Bondinho Da Banda Da Barra) at 3PM and parade until 7PM. Then in Ipanema, popular bloco Empolga Às 9 will meet at 4PM on Ipanema Beach (in front of R. Joana Angélica). They will parade until 8PM. It is important to note that meet-up points and locations of the bloco parades are subject to change.

Tonight it’s time again for the best of hip-hop, divas, and rap, as the Nêga party returns to Fosfobox in Copacabana.

Duo (Gávea)
It’s Sunday and that means it’s time to end your weekend with the best of house and electro pop at Duo in Gávea’s 00 (Zero Zero). The party begins early at 5PM and continues in the chic indoor/outdoor venue until 5AM. Things usually get started on the outdoor deck with DJs spinning and then gradually shift inside where more DJs spin. The weekly event is also known to host internationally recognized guest DJs.

MÚSICA BRASILEIRA:

Rogê (Lapa)
It’s time to dance as singer-songwriter Rogê returns for his weekly show at Lapa’s Carioca de Gema. The lively up-and-coming performer will present his own compositions as well as covers of works by Jorge, Djavan, and Jorge Benjor, among others.

Roda de Samba and Soccer (Football) (Lapa)
Sundays are all about samba and soccer at Lapa’s Leviano bar. Every week beginning at 5PM the venue plays live games on their screens with samba dancers following the matches and the group Samba Di Buteco playing classics of the genre, including works by Arlindo Cruz, Zeca Pagodinho and João Nogueira, among others. DJ Mukato will also spin during the night.

Saloon 79 (Botafogo)
Tonight it’s time for the best of contemporary music and visual arts at Saloon 79 in Botafogo. Bands SLVDR, Lupe de Lupe, and Menores Atos will perform live and “Escrota Escola de Cartazes” (Bummer School Posters), the work of Lê Almeida will be on exhibition. Additionally, DJs Ivan Cascon and Larissa Conforto will spin during the night.

Bar Urca (Urca)
If you have never been to Bar Urca on a Sunday afternoon to drink beers and eat salgados while watching the sunset, you are missing a big part of what it means to be a Carioca. This simple establishment on the bay-side has been a hit since 1939.

This American-owned restaurant and bar on Copacabana Beach is a great place for food and drinks. Additionally, every night Tony Boka is performing live from 8PM until midnight. Boka is known for his varied repertoire that always pleases the crowd.
