FIFA Fan Fest June 12thThursday’s Rio Nightlife Pick –Today the long-awaited 2014 World Cup begins and that means the FIFA Fan Fest on Copacabana beach begins as well. From June 12th through July 13th, Copacabana beach will be home to the FIFA Fan Fest during the 2014 World Cup games.

The 31,000 m² area on the beach between the streets of Princesa Isabel and Duvivier, will house a large screen to view the matches live and a stage for entertainers that during the tournament will include; Sorriso Maroto, Dudu Nobre, Arlindo Cruz, Anitta, Sandra de Sá, Bom Gosto, Suvaco de Cristo, Cordão da Bola Preta, Fogo e Paixão, Bloco Brasil, Empolga às Nove, Blitz and more.

All 64 matches of the World Cup will be shown live, with the exception of simultaneous games, when one match will be broadcast later. On Brazilian match days a second 50m ² screen will be added. Each game day, the area between the streets of Princesa Isabel and Duvivier will open two hours before the first match of the day and always close at 10PM. Capacity for the area is 20,000. Entry is free and entrance will be granted according to order of arrival.

Dogs Days are Over (Copacabana)
It’s a big night in Rio as it’s both the opening day of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and Dia dos Namorados (Brazilian Valentine’s Day). The city is pulsing with energy, filled with tourists and there are celebrations and viewing parties throughtout Rio. After the game, why not check out Copacabana’s popular Fosfobox club as it celebrates in style tonight with the Dogs Days are Over party. DJs Louis Ayman, Tomas Tróia, Kurtenbach and Célio The Manager will spin the best of trap, hip hop, and house and EDM in the clubs basement while DJs Joe Kinni, Lia Novello, and Eleutério will hold things down with EDM and house above at the Fosfobar.

Arena Duo and Old is Black (Gávea)
Gávea’s chic club 00 (Zero Zero) will host a World Cup viewing party today, playing the Brazil vs. Croatia opening game live. DJs Dani Vieira and Caio Bucker will also spin during the event. Entry is free from 3PM to 4PM, R$25 from 4PM to 6PM and R$40 from 6PM to 10PM. The Old is Black event will follow with DJs Farinha, Bruno Vineli, Lulinha, and RV spinning the best of Motown, soul, bambatta, club bangers and trap.

Caldeirão da Copa (Glória)
Tonight La Passion Club in Glória will also host a World Cup viewing party with an open bar and DJs Rodrigo Mattos and Daniel Faria spinng the best of house, hip hop, funk, and sertanejo. The open bar will feature Antarctica beer, rounds of tequila, and Sex on the Beach until game time and snacks during game breaks.

Yet another great way to celebrate tonight is by going to Copacabana’s increasingly popular club Cave for the best in house and deep house. Tonight, Cave Sessions will host special guests, Funky Fat, Eclectic, and Pedro Piu.

Casa da Matriz’s weekly Veneno events, filled with good music and beautiful people, have helped weekends start early in Rio for over ten years. It’s all about samba tonight at Lapa’s Carioca da Gema as the band Samba Urbano gets things started at 9PM and Tempero Carioca follows at 11PM with veterans of the genre delivering one of the best rodas de samba in the city tonight.

Forró and Salsa Leviano (Lapa)
Tonight at Lapa’s Leviano bar, the group Mano a Mano starts things off with salsa and merengue on the first floor, while on the second floor the weekly Forró Leviano party will present some of best new forró pé de serra in Rio. Additionally, the French group Orquestra do Fubá will perform tonight. DJ Angolano will spin samba at 8PM to start things off and DJ Léo Araripe will spin forró at 10PM.

Daniel Neves and Nilze Carvalho (Centro)
Tonight at 7:30PM Daniel Neves gets things started at Centro’s Rio Scenarium with his reinterpretations of the work of João Nogueira, Cartola, Zé Ketti, and Nelson Cavaquinho, among others. Singer-songwriter and mandolinist Nilze Carvalho will follow at 10:30 PM with a performance of classic sambas from her most recent album entitled, Que É Meu.

Blue Agave (Ipanema)
It’s Language Exchange night at the Blue Agave in Ipanema. Set up like speed dating, native English speakers will be paired up with native Portuguese speakers at tables. The pairs will then speak English for five minutes followed by Portuguese for five minutes. After those ten minutes, each speaker will move on to a new table and conversation partner. It’s a fun, educational event and a great opportunity to mix and mingle with native speakers of both English and Portuguese.
