The foreigner community in the Cidade Maravilhosa continues to grow especially with more and more people of various backgrounds in writing and journalism arriving for the World Cup. Yet for many, it is the social implications of hosting the mega events, and also the every-vibrant culture found across Rio and Brazil that inspires writing.

Michaels’ blog Rio Real Blog focuses on social issues and happenings throughout the city of Rio both in Portuguese and in English. “I am drawn to write about Rio because the issues the city faces are the most central to humanity today, all rooted in inequality,” says Michaels. “This is a fascinating laboratory for the rest of the world.”

Tom LeMesurier, who is at the helm of the Eat Rio Blog, explains that he is “drawn to write about Rio because there are so many fascinating stories waiting to be discovered. The people, the history, the culture, the cuisine – all these areas are richly layered with stories just demanding to be told. With so many great topics, writing about Rio is a real pleasure.”

While this edition of the Rio Writer MixUp event is a great opportunity to meet the guest bloggers, and other writers face-to-face, it is also a chance to learn more about the city through other Cariocas’ and foreigners’ perspectives.

Special promotions at the Gringo Café will be available for those attending the event including one free longneck bottle of beer with any burger. In addition, bottled beers will be available for R$5 and wine glasses for R$10. There will be music from Tee Cardaci and entrance, as always, is free, but please RSVP on the Facebook event page.
