Flu Held to Draw in Brasileirão: Daily

By Robbie Blakeley, Senior Contributing Reporter

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Fluminense drew 2-2 with Grêmio last night in the 31st round of the 2012 Brasileirão at the Engenhão Stadium. The result frustrated Tricolores after the side took the lead, only to concede an equalizer late on.

Their advantage over second placed Atlético-MG remains at nine points after the Mineiro club also drew 2-2, away at Santos. Fluminense will now travel to face Atlético in Belo Horizonte on Sunday.

After a slow first-half the game exploded into life after the interval. Elano gave the visitors the lead on 54 minutes before Digão leveled less than five minutes later from close range.

Rafael Sóbis put Flu in front with a thunderbolt of a strike and when Marcelo Moreno was sent off for Grêmio Flu probably thought they had done enough. However Zé Roberto equalized five minutes from time to rob Flu of a sixth straight victory.

Meanwhile, Flamengo’s poor form continued with a goalless draw away to Portuguesa. The Rubro-Negro have won just one of their last twelve matches.

Tonight, Botafogo take on Vasco at the Engenhão in a Carioca classíco, kick-off is at 9PM.
