The result moved Fogão up into seventh place with 34 points, just five off the G-4 and a qualification place for next year’s Copa Libertadores. Cruzeiro had started the game  the better side and took the lead through Tinga on eighteen minutes.

But a brace from Seedorf in less than a minutes meant Botafogo went in at the interval with the advantage. A third from Jadson ten minutes after the interval sealed the deal.

Two other Carioca sides were also in action yesterday evening. In Recife, Vasco came from behind to earn a point in a 1-1 draw with Náutico.

Vasco were largely dominated throughout the match but snatched a draw thanks to Fellipe Bastos in the second half. The side have now won just twice in six matches.

And things continue to slide back downhill for Flamengo who lost for the second time in three days. The Rubro-Negro suffered a 1-0 reverse against Ponte Preta in Volta Redonda.

Tonight, Fluminense host Santos knowing that three points will take them to the top of the table for the first time this season.
