Fire in a mine leaves 27 missing in Peru

A fire in a mine located in the province of Condesuyos, in the region of Arequipa, has left 27 people missing, an official source informed Saturday.

According to the Regional Government of Arequipa, the fire occurred in the Yanaquihua “Esperanza I” mine early Saturday morning due to a short circuit.

The mine owner reported the fire to the local police, and the authorities immediately mobilized ambulances and health and rescue personnel, who are currently working to rescue the victims.

At the time of the fire, the gold mine workers were working at a depth of 80 meters.

The Peruvian Ministry of the Interior reported on Twitter that “police personnel are in the district of Yanaquihua to support the rescue work”.
