Brazil’s Supreme Court prosecutes another 250 Brazilian spring protesters for attacks on State Powers

The Supreme Federal Court (STF) of Brazil reported yesterday that by the majority, it decided to prosecute another 250 Brazilian Spring protesters, accused of attacking the headquarters of the State Powers in the city of Brasilia, last January 8.

The institution detailed that the decision was taken based on an electronic vote with the result of six in favour against one against, with which a majority was achieved, considering that 10 magistrates must exercise the franchise.

According to the ruling, with this Sunday’s decision, 550 people have already been indicted concerning the attacks and damages to the Executive, Congress and STF headquarters.

The rapporteur of the case, Justice Alexandre de Moraes, voted to indict the 250 defendants and wait for their respective sentences.

Moraes’ vote was seconded by his colleagues Antonio Dias Toffoli, Edson Fachin, Cármen Lúcia, Rosa Weber and Gilmar Mendes.

Justice André Mendonça voted against the process, arguing that the STF does not have the competence to do so, which is the responsibility of the ordinary courts of first instance.

The Attorney General’s Office has denounced 1,390 people related to the January 8 attacks, which will continue on May 9 with the fourth set of accusations against another 250 people.

These individuals are charged with the alleged crimes of unlawful association, undermining the rule of law and the public and historical heritage, among others.
