Brazil: Petrobras confirms discussion on change in fuel pricing policy

Petrobras said on Sunday (14) that it would discuss, early this week, a change in its pricing policy for diesel and gasoline.

“The Company clarifies that any changes will be based on technical studies, in compliance with governance practices and the applicable internal procedures,” it said in a statement.

Currently, the value of fuels is calculated in dollars, and oil follows the international quotation.

Thus, when the barrel of oil or the US currency rises in the international market, the price of gasoline and diesel also rises in Brazil.

On Friday (12), the president of Petrobras, Jean Paul Prates, told the press that the new criteria should balance stability and volatility.

The idea is to avoid prolonged price paralysis and numerous readjustments quickly.

“We don’t need to go back to when there was no adjustment all year round. In 2006 and 2007, this happened.”

“And also, we don’t need to live within the marathon of 118 readjustments for a single fuel, as it was in 2017, which led to the huge crisis of the truckers’ strike,” he said.
