Brazil: inland shipping cargo transportation shows a positive balance for the third consecutive month

Inland navigation cargo transportation in Brazil presented a positive balance for the third consecutive month.

The National Waterway Transport Agency (Antaq) released the data.

The survey shows that 9.3 million tonnes were transported between Brazilian inland terminals in the first quarter of the year, representing an increase of 4.12% compared to the same period in 2022.

The Paraguay and South Atlantic hydrographic regions stand out, transporting 1.57 million tonnes (+81%) and 1.2 million tonnes (+10%) in the year’s first three months.

The Amazon and Tocantins-Araguaia hydrographic regions recorded 6.44 million tonnes (-2.2%) and 1.96 million tons (-20.6%) transported, respectively.

The commodity that showed the highest percentage growth between January and March 2023 was iron ore.

In the first quarter, 1.36 million tonnes of the mineral were transported between inland ports, representing an increase of 56.36% over the same period last year.

The Inland Terminal for Private Use (TUP) that stood out in handling was Granel Química Ladário Ltda (MT), with 660,000 tonnes handled, representing an increase of 240% compared to the same period last year.

However, the inland port facility that mobilized the most cargo in this period was the Terminal de Hidrovias do Brasil Miritituba, which recorded 1.4 million tonnes of cargo handled at inland terminals in the first three months of the year (a positive variation of 17.6% compared to the same period of 2022).

The Port of Porto Velho (RO) closes the podium of the main highlights of facilities serving inland navigation with 548,000 tonnes, representing a growth of 121.1% compared to the first quarter of last year.

In March, 3.72 million tonnes were transported between terminals on inland routes, representing an increase of 4.07% over the same period last year.

Soybean transportation was the highlight of the month, with 1.96 million tonnes transported, showing a positive variation of 19.2% compared to the same month in 2022.

The hydrographic region that stood out was Paraguay, which transported more than 752,000 tonnes in March, a comparative increase of 59% between months.
