Delta variant already accounts for 45% of Covid cases in Rio de Janeiro

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - In a period of only ten days, the Covid-19 genomic surveillance program of the State Health Secretariat (SES) has detected an increase of more than 50% in the percentage of patients with the Delta variant, considered by experts to be more contagious.

In the latest bulletin, published July 23, Delta accounted for 16.62% of cases, and 78.36% were of the Gamma variant. In the analysis published Tuesday (3) by the secretariat, the figures increased to 26.09% and 66.58%, respectively.
